Using AI To Turn Food Waste Into Nutrient-Rich Algae
TOKYO, July 10, 2026 - ANA HOLDINGS INC. (ANA HD), through its corporate venture capital fund, "ANA Future Frontier Fund L.P.," today announced its investment in AlgaleX Inc. (AlgaleX), a biotechnology company that leverages proprietary AI cultivation technology to produce edible algae and run its BioFarm business.
As the scarcity of natural nutritional resources emerges as a structural global challenge, AlgaleX is on a mission to develop sustainable, algae-derived food ingredients and regenerate untapped nutritional sources into sources of value. At the core of its technology is "Touji-24," an AI cultivation control system that predicts and optimizes growth conditions in real time. This lets AlgaleX use inconsistent, low-cost inputs - including food waste - as culture media turning underused resources into high-value nutrients.
In the food sector, AlgaleX already produces and commercializes "Umamo," an edible algae containing 13 times the DHA of mackerel on a per-gram basis while delivering rich umami flavor, with growing adoption across restaurants and retailers in Japan and abroad. AlgaleX is also advancing its BioFarm business - partnering with industries facing fermentation and cultivation challenges to deploy its cultivation control technology across diverse sectors. Through these efforts, the company aims to establish itself as a platform for circular, sustainable nutrition.
