In May 1964, ANA ushered in a new era with the introduction of its first jet aircraft, the Boeing 727, initially servicing domestic routes within Japan. Over the next six decades, ANA has expanded its jet fleet transporting passengers throughout Japan and across the world.

Since 2011, ANA has partnered with Boeing in advancing the next-generation aircraft and was the original launch customer of the 787 Dreamliner. The ANA Group operates all three variants of the 787 Dreamliner on international and domestic routes.

The newest B787-10 is scheduled to operate on ANA's busiest domestic routes from Haneda to Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo and Okinawa.

With a high passenger capacity, the aircraft enhances travel efficiency and delivers greater fuel savings on short domestic routes compared to a B777-200.

Test Flights: Unveiling ANA’s newest domestic flagship aircraft

B787 Captain Ryo Taniguchi speaking at the unveiling ceremony

On March 25, 2024, ANA held an unveiling ceremony for its newest next-generation domestic flagship aircraft at Haneda Airport. Following the ceremony, B787 Captain Ryo Taniguchi, from ANA’s Flight Operations Center, shared insights from his experiences conducting test flights with the aircraft.

“I am absolutely thrilled to take part in the unveiling ceremony for an aircraft I was helping to test,” said Taniguchi.

The purpose of a test flight is to ensure the aircraft meets design standards. A typical B787 test flights last up to 4.5 hours, each test flight on the B787-10 was between five to six hours.

“In the flight deck, every aspect is checked extensively from the flight control system to backup systems. Various other tests are conducted in the cabin, including of the in-flight entertainment systems and seats,” said Taniguchi.

Two days after the unveiling ceremony, ANA’s newest domestic flagship entered service with an inaugural flight from Haneda to Sapporo.

“As a pilot, the length of this aircraft makes it unique. Since the B787-10 has a longer wheelbase and overall length when compared to a B787-8, we must be more careful during taxi and timing of touchdown during landing,” says Taniguchi.

For passengers, the longer fuselage creates for a spacious cabin. Taniguchi hopes that ANA customers will be able to experience the new seats and large seatback monitors on their flights with this new aircraft.

ANA Group continues to strive for the highest standard in aircraft safety, fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.
